A mixed metal oxide (MMO) anode is an impressed-current cathodic-protection anode commonly built on a titanium substrate with an electrically conductive mixed-metal-oxide coating. The coating activates the titanium as the anodic surface, allowing the anode to deliver protection current while operating at a low coating-consumption rate.
In practical terms, MMO anodes are used where an external DC power source supplies cathodic-protection current to a structure. Geometry, coating chemistry, rated current density, environment, groundbed design, cable system, and intended life all matter when selecting or sizing the anode. A product description alone is therefore not enough to determine a design current or service life for a specific installation.
